These lectures provide a fascinating glimpse of how one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century (and certainly the most creative!) actually TAUGHT his classesin a unique, almost “stream-of-consciousness” manner.

The lectures form an excellent introduction to Wittgenstein's middle-period thought, covering a broad range of philosophical topics, ranging from core questions in the philosophy of language, mind, logic, and mathematics, to illuminating discussions of subjects on which Wittgenstein.

Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein (/ ˈ v ɪ t ɡ ən ʃ t aɪ n,-s t aɪ n /; German: [ˈluːtvɪç ˈvɪtgənˌʃtaɪn]; 26 April – 29 April ) Wittgensteins Lectures book an Austrian-British philosopher who worked primarily in logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language.

For several terms at Cambridge inLudwig Wittgenstein lectured on the philosophical foundations of mathematics. A lecture class taught by Wittgenstein, however, hardly resembled a sat on a chair in the middle of the room, with some of the class sitting in chairs, some on Brand: University of Chicago Press.

Taking the work seriously in this way, we may want to understand better how it came to be composed and here Moore’s essay on Wittgenstein’s lectures of to and the notes he took in those lectures are invaluable – for the Blue Book is separated from those lectures by less than half a year and marks, in fact, Wittgenstein’s next.

Ludwig Wittgenstein - Lecture on Ethics Delivered in November to the Heretics Society, Cambridge University My subject, as you know, is Ethics and I will adopt the explanation of that term which Professor Moore has given in his book Principia Ethica.

He says: "Ethics is the general enquiry into what is good." Now I am going to use the term. The Yellow Book is ample by its self, however, and is as cogent of an introduction to Wittgenstein as the Blue and Brown Books. The other set of lectures (no title, just years) are equally a breeze to read, but I have yet to put them under my thumb in the literature of Wittgenstein.

Regardless, their addition makes this book a fountain of ideas/5(2). Despite the varying authorships and intervals of time during which these Lectures and Conversations took place, the book is a surprisingly integrated whole and not simply a miscellany.

What seems to unite its three topics and their treatment is Wittgenstein's examination of the kind of evidence upon which each of the three disciplines. The Blue and Brown Books are two sets of notes taken during lectures conducted by Ludwig Wittgenstein from to They were mimeographed as two separated books, and a few copies were circulated in a restricted circle during Wittgenstein's lifetime.
