Most perennials a natural life cycle: Perennial plants die back in cold weather, then sprout again next spring, and the spring after that, and the spring after that. (What sets perennial plants apart from shrubs—which may also be perennial—is that garden perennials are herbaceous; shrubs typically have woody branches.).   Some perennials are prone to a common disease called powdery mildew. It creates a gray or white fuzzy growth on the leaves. To keep this, and many other fungal diseases at bay, water perennials in the morning or early afternoon hours and use a soaker hose (shown here at the right) instead of a sprinkler.

No book, no matter how good, will be as accurate as your own observations about when plants bloom and how they perform in your own garden. Seedling, potted or field-grown: When purchasing perennials, try to get the largest, most mature plant that you can afford. With a perennial garden (for both perennials for shade and perennials for sun) most of the work will be devoted to the initial landscaping and planting of the flowers. From then on, with proper maintenance, you will have a fabulous garden that returns year after year.
